Geography of the Heartlands
A field survey compiled in service of the Imperial Cartographic Office, by order of the Council. The author has endeavored to describe each region as it presents itself to the traveler and settler, rather than as it appears on paper. Names of settlements and landmarks have been omitted in deference to the Office’s forthcoming official designations.
The Imperial Basin
The land immediately surrounding the great city is best understood not as a single terrain but as a series of concentric conditions, each one shaped by its proximity to the Dragon’s Spine mountains at the city’s back.
Timbur Deep sits where the volcanic range meets the plain, pressed against the mountain like a thing that grew there rather than was built. From the lower districts, the range reads as broad and grey, less impressive than its reputation suggests - a wall of dark stone and persistent cloud, unremarkable until the light changes or the season turns and the upper reaches hold snow while the valley floor is still warm. From the upper districts, closer to the mountain’s foot, the impression corrects itself. The peaks are not small. The city simply makes them seem so from below.
The farmland that feeds the city spreads south and west from the mountain’s shadow, following the two river systems that bracket the range on either side. The eastern river is the larger and more traveled of the two, running south from the high country before bending toward the sea. It is a quiet river in its lower reaches - broad, slow, the color of pewter on overcast days - and the land along its banks is dark and generous, the kind of soil that produces without argument. The western river is narrower and less celebrated, but no less important; it drains a separate basin entirely, and the redundancy is not accidental. The region between the two rivers, sheltered from the worst of the northern winds by the mountain’s bulk, is among the most reliably productive land in the known world.
Supply moves along both rivers by barge. The eastern route is the longer and slower of the two, carrying the majority of what arrives from the coast. The western river supports a ferry system that reaches distant farms both north and west of the city. Neither route is swift, but both are dependable, and dependability is worth more than speed when you are feeding four hundred thousand people.
The dark mountain range itself - the volcanic spine that gives the city its character - is not a place for settlements. It is too steep, too irregular, too full of the kind of terrain that swallows expeditions and returns nothing. The stone is young by geological measure, sharp where it should be rounded, hollow where it should be solid. Travelers who have entered it in any depth describe a landscape that does not behave consistently - drainage that runs the wrong direction, passes that close without warning, drops that appear without preamble. Bandits work it. Larger things work it too. The city’s garrison does not pursue either very far in.
The Central Ridgeland
Travel north and west from the city and the terrain begins to break apart. What was open river-bottom farmland becomes a series of compartments - valleys separated by ridgelines, each one slightly different from the last in elevation, in soil character, in what it grows and how it floods. This is not one landscape but many small ones arranged in conversation with each other, and the people who live in it reflect that arrangement.
A traveler entering from the south will notice it first as a rhythm: a day’s walk across a valley floor of good farmland, a half-day’s climb to a ridge, a descent into another valley floor that may be warmer or colder, wetter or drier, than the one before. The ridges are not high enough to be impassable - most are forested, crossable in a long morning - but they are consistent enough that each valley develops its own character over generations. People here know their own valley first, the adjacent one second, and the broader region only abstractly. Allegiances run accordingly.
The climate in this region behaves the way contested terrain always does - unpredictably, but within understood limits. Winters arrive with purpose: snow that accumulates in the high passes while the valley floors remain workable, then releases all at once when the temperature shifts and the melt comes down the ridges in brown torrents. Summers are warm and damp, the kind of heat that sits in the valleys and does not move. Storms come up from the south in the shoulder seasons, heavy and sudden, and the locals regard them with the particular calm of people who have planned for exactly this.
Settlements here tend toward self-sufficiency because the ridges make outside supply unreliable in winter. A valley with a mill and a forge and enough grain storage can survive a closed pass. One without cannot. The people are not unfriendly - travelers are welcomed, particularly those with trade goods - but they are watchful in the way people are watchful when they have learned that most problems arrive on the road.
Fortifications are common and modest: a stone tower on a ridge, a walled farmstead at a valley mouth, the occasional more serious structure where a pass narrows to a useful chokepoint. None of these are military installations in any formal sense. They are the architecture of people who have concluded, correctly, that the best time to address an approaching problem is before it arrives in the valley floor.
In parts of the central ridgeland, the landscape stops behaving in intuitive ways. Where limestone dominates, water rarely remains on the surface for long. Rain and runoff find cracks in the stone and disappear underground, causing rivers to vanish into sinkholes only to reemerge miles away with no visible connection. Springs burst from cliff faces without warning, and isolated pools rise or fall according to rainfall that may have occurred days earlier and far beyond sight.
The cave systems beneath this country are vast and poorly understood. Many remain unexplored, and not all who enter return. Beneath the ridges lies an underground world of ancient water-carved passages, lightless ecosystems, and hidden refuges used by those who value obscurity over comfort. Of course not everything that dwells in the dark is benign, and many who set foot inside never again see the light of day.
Settlement here is difficult but not impossible. Wells can dry or flood without warning as subterranean channels shift. Foundations are unreliable where hollow stone lies beneath the surface, and roads require constant repair as sinkholes and settling ground undo previous work. Even so, people have lived here for generations, developing a practical truce with the terrain. They know which springs endure, which ground holds, and where the earth sounds wrong underfoot.
The Great Valley
Further north and east, the terrain rises through the foothills and the character of the forest changes. The transition is gradual and then sudden: mixed woodland giving way to stands of increasingly large conifers, the canopy climbing, the undergrowth thinning, the light arriving in columns rather than sheets. And then, without particular announcement, the great trees begin.
They are not like other trees. This is the first thing a traveler notices and the last thing they forget. The trunks are the color of dried blood, deeply furrowed, wide enough that a small household could shelter inside one and not feel cramped. The canopy begins far above where canopies normally begin and continues past where vision loses confidence in distances. Sound behaves differently underneath them - voices carry strangely, footsteps are absorbed, the wind that moves through the upper branches produces something between a resonance and a silence. These ancient groves serve as the ancestral home of the Visari, who live within them as if they are part of the landscape too.
The valley floor between the groves is fertile in the particular way of land that has been composting under the same trees for longer than anyone can usefully reckon. The soil is dark red, spongy, resistant to drainage. It grows what it grows willingly but does not always cooperate with what a farmer might prefer. The people who work it have adapted accordingly, growing varieties suited to the light conditions and the soil character rather than importing methods that belong somewhere else.
The climate here is what a madman might conjure by replacing simple pine forests with something older and stranger. The same cold winters, the same dramatic seasonal transitions, the same morning fog sitting in the lower ground while the upper slopes are already clear. But the presence of the great trees changes the local weather in small, consistent ways - they hold moisture, moderate temperature swings, slow the wind at ground level. A grove of them functions as its own space entirely, and the settlements that have grown up within or adjacent to the groves reflect this: somewhat warmer in winter, somewhat cooler in summer, always damp in the way that old wood is always damp.
The range is not uninhabited. The Khuldinai have made their home in the high country for longer than the Empire has existed to have an opinion about it, and they remain there by arrangement rather than by permission - a distinction they would be quick to make and the Empire has learned not to press. Their settlements exist at elevations that most people would not consider survivable for permanent habitation, and their relationship to the cold and the stone is less one of endurance than of preference. The people here carry themselves with the particular quality of those who live among things larger and older than themselves. It is not quite reverence - not in the way same way as the Visari - but there is a quietness in how they speak of the trees, a reluctance to speculate too confidently about things that were old before their grandparents were born.
The Northern Wall
Beyond the old grove country, the terrain rises without apology.
The foothills give way to true mountain country over the course of a day’s travel that feels considerably longer. The air changes first - thinner, colder, carrying a metallic quality that experienced travelers associate with permanent snowpack. The treeline drops and the exposed ridgeline climbs until the two meet somewhere above the land where ordinary ambitions about movement should be entertained.
The range itself is not a mountain range in the way that phrase is usually meant. It is more accurate to call it a wall that happens to be made of mountains. There are passes. Travelers who know them can use them, under the right conditions, at the right time of year. What there is not is the sense that the range is a feature of the landscape one moves through. It is a boundary. It is where the landscape stops.
The peaks hold permanent snow. Not seasonal accumulation but ice that has been there long enough to become structural - glaciers in the older formations, dense snow that still predates living memory in the younger. Meltwater from this ice is the origin of both major river systems that feed the region below, and in that sense the range is not merely the northern limit of the Heartlands but its source. What falls on those peaks as snow arrives in the city below as the water that fills the wells, feeds the crops, and floats the barges.
Living in proximity to the wall is possible but makes specific demands. The settlements that exist here are small, purposeful, and maintained by people who have made a particular calculation about what the advantages of this location are worth. The advantages are real: the elevation provides sightlines that have no equal elsewhere in the region, the passes are controllable in ways that flat country never is, and the cold keeps certain problems away that trouble the lowlands. The costs are also real: supply is difficult, winter is long, and the range does not distinguish between threats it stops and people it straps.
For the Legion, this is simply referred to as the northern deployment zone. For everyone else, it is where the known world ends.
Weather Patterns of the Heartlands
The Heartlands sits between two competing air systems that never fully resolve their disagreement. Cold dry continental air descends from the northwest off the high ranges year-round, while warm humid air rises from the sea to the south. The Heartlands basin is where they meet. The result is a climate of strong seasonal swings, high annual precipitation, and weather that changes character faster than the terrain suggests it should. The eastern wall range traps most of this moisture before it can escape eastward, which keeps the Heartlands wetter than the land beyond it and amplifies the collision between air masses over the basin itself.
Spring
The cold continental air begins losing ground to the warming sea air in early spring, and the transition is rarely polite. Heavy rainfall arrives in sustained events rather than steady drizzle - days of standing water in the lower fields, rivers running fast and brown with snowmelt from the peaks above. Flooding in the valley bottoms is a regular agricultural calculation, not a disaster. The compartmentalized terrain of the central ridgeland means each valley floods on its own schedule. Farmers here read the upland snowpack before they plant anything.
Summer
The sea air wins the season and the Heartlands turns hot and humid in a way that surprises travelers expecting a temperate climate. Heat sits in the valleys and doesn’t move. The ridgelines catch whatever breeze exists; the valley floors do not. Storm season runs through midsummer - fast-moving systems that build over the sea, push north, and release hard over the basin before dissipating against the northern and eastern ranges. The storms arrive with little warning and pass quickly, leaving the air briefly clean before the humidity reasserts itself.
Autumn
The balance tips back toward the continental air as the sea cools. Mornings turn cold fast while afternoons stay warm long enough to be deceptive. Fog is the defining feature of autumn in the Heartlands - cold air sliding down from the ridges at night hits the warmer valley floor air and stays there until midday. Harvest happens in this light: flat, grey-white, diffuse. The ridgeline farms finish before the valley farms, which finish before the river-bottom farms. The harvest sequence runs roughly three weeks across the elevation gradient.
Winter
The continental air reasserts fully and the Heartlands argues with it rather than surrendering to it. Snow arrives in events - a hard fall that blankets the basin, sits for a week or two, then a warm pulse from the south clears it. Then another fall. The city never fully locks into winter the way the high range does; it cycles in and out of it. The dramatic quality of the snow is partly elevation - the caldera rim holds white for months while the valley floor below is already wet and grey again. When both air masses are present simultaneously and in roughly equal strength, the Heartlands gets its worst weather: sustained heavy snowfall, then immediate thaw, then freeze again as the continental air returns. The infrastructure knows this pattern. The roads are built for it. New arrivals are not.
